First recorded in 1569, Hodge Hill is a Birmingham suburb located approximately 7km (4½mls) east of the city centre. Originally a manor that stretched from Bromford Lane between the Tame and Cole rivers to Water Orton, the western half amalgamated with Birmingham in 1931. Modern Hodge Hill now lies east of Bromford Lane with the exception of the Bromford Estate, north of the River Cole and west of the junction of Newport Road and Heathland Avenue, a location locally known as The Clock after the garage that formally stood there. Following the Second World War there was extensive housing development which had started during the previous decade but there are still a number of attractive open spaces including the Cole Valley Nature Conservation Area and Hodge Hill Common. The area, which demographically is fairly diverse, benefits from a population that has a wide ethnic and social mix.
